SoundSense privacy policy
Last updated: 13 October 2026
This policy explains what happens to your information when you use the SoundSense mobile application on iPhone or Android ("SoundSense", "the app"). SoundSense is made by Just IT, MB (company code 305582536, VAT LT100013422616, Vilnius, Lithuania), which is the data controller for the app. Contact: info@just-it.lt.
The short version
- SoundSense needs no account. We do not run a server for the app and do not receive your measurements.
- Your microphone is used only to calculate sound levels on your phone. Audio is held in short memory buffers for that calculation and is never recorded, saved or sent.
- Your saved measurements, titles, place names and notes stay on your phone.
- The free version shows ads from Google AdMob. Google receives device and usage data to show and measure those ads, subject to the privacy choices you make in the app.
- Purchases go through Apple or Google. RevenueCat helps us check which purchases you own and receives your purchase history for that.
- Google Firebase Crashlytics sends us crash reports so we can fix problems. Google Firebase Analytics counts how the app is used; in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland it runs only if you consent. Neither receives audio, sound levels, notes, place names or recording titles.
Microphone
When you start the meter or a recording, SoundSense reads the microphone signal and turns it into sound level values (dBA) on your phone. The audio itself is kept only in short-lived memory buffers while those values are calculated. SoundSense does not save audio files, does not send audio anywhere, and does not try to recognise speech or identify people.
You can withdraw microphone access at any time in your phone's settings. The meter then stops working until you allow access again.
If you choose to keep a recording running with the screen locked (Premium), Android shows a persistent notification while it runs and iOS shows its microphone indicator. SoundSense stops using the microphone when you stop the recording.
Information stored on your phone
SoundSense saves the following only in the app's private storage on your phone:
- measurement results: sound levels, minimum, maximum and average values, durations, time over your threshold, gaps and quality flags;
- what you type: recording titles, place names, notes and markers;
- your reference adjustment (calibration offset) and app settings;
- technical details needed to read a result correctly, such as the app version, device model, operating system version and microphone route.
Place names are text you type. SoundSense does not use GPS or your device location.
These files are excluded from iCloud and Android cloud backups. Uninstalling the app removes them. You can delete individual recordings in History at any time. We have no copy, so we cannot restore deleted data.
Sharing you start
When you share or export a result (CSV, image or PDF), SoundSense prepares the file on your phone and hands it to the app you pick in the system share sheet, such as email or a messenger. What happens next is governed by that app and the people you send it to.
Advertising (Google AdMob)
The free version of SoundSense shows banner, interstitial and optional rewarded ads served by Google AdMob (Google Ireland Limited for users in the European Economic Area and Switzerland; Google LLC elsewhere). Premium and "Remove ads" turn ads off; when they are active the app makes no ad requests. No ads are shown while a recording is running.
To show, limit and measure ads and to prevent fraud, the Google Mobile Ads SDK in the app collects:
- your IP address, which may be used to estimate your general location;
- device and advertising identifiers (Android advertising ID and app set ID, or the iOS advertising identifier if you allow tracking, and app-specific identifiers);
- interactions with ads and the app, such as app launches, taps and video views;
- diagnostic and performance information, such as app launch time and crash data.
SoundSense never gives advertisers your sound levels, audio, notes, place names or recording titles.
Your choices. In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, SoundSense shows Google's consent message (a Google-certified consent management platform) before personalised ads, and you can change your choice later under Settings > Privacy choices. On iPhone, SoundSense asks for permission to track under Apple's App Tracking Transparency; if you decline, the advertising identifier is not shared and ads are not personalised using it. On Android you can reset or delete your advertising ID in the system settings. If you decline personalised ads, Google may still show non-personalised ads, which use data such as your approximate location and the content of the app, and may use cookies or identifiers for frequency capping, reporting and fraud prevention.
The first session after you install SoundSense shows no ads and no consent or tracking prompt.
Google's use of this data is described in How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services and the Google Privacy Policy.
Crash reports and app usage (Google Firebase)
SoundSense uses two Google Firebase services, provided by Google Ireland Limited for users in the European Economic Area and Switzerland and Google LLC elsewhere. Google processes this data for us as our processor, under the Firebase data processing terms. Firebase never receives audio, sound levels, notes, place names or recording titles.
Firebase Crashlytics (crash reports). If SoundSense crashes or hits a serious error, the app sends a crash report: the crash stack trace (which part of the app failed), the device model, operating system version, app version, the time of the crash, free memory and storage, and a Crashlytics installation identifier, a random ID created for this installation. We use crash reports only to find and fix crashes. Crashlytics keeps crash reports for 90 days. Crash reports are sent from store versions of the app without a prompt, because we need them to keep the app working reliably (legal basis: legitimate interests).
Firebase Analytics (app usage). Firebase Analytics records app usage events such as app opens, sessions, screens viewed and in-app purchases, with an app-instance identifier (a random ID for this installation), device model, operating system, app version, language and your coarse location (country or region) derived from your IP address. We look only at totals, such as how many people open the app or buy Premium, to improve SoundSense. We set Firebase Analytics to keep this data for 2 months.
- In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, Firebase Analytics stays off until you give consent in Google's consent message (consent to store and access information on your device). You can withdraw consent at any time under Settings > Privacy choices, and Analytics stops collecting. If you never see the consent message, for example with Premium or "Remove ads", Analytics stays off unless you consented earlier. Settings > Privacy choices is available wherever consent is required, including with Premium or "Remove ads", so you can change or withdraw an earlier choice there at any time.
- Elsewhere, where no consent is required, Firebase Analytics runs after the app starts.
- Firebase Analytics does not use your Android advertising ID or iOS advertising identifier, is not used for advertising, and is not linked to AdMob.
Uninstalling SoundSense deletes the installation and app-instance identifiers on your phone; a new installation gets new ones.
Purchases (Apple, Google and RevenueCat)
Subscriptions, Lifetime access and Remove ads are sold by the App Store or Google Play. Apple or Google take your payment; we never see your card or bank details, name or email address.
We use RevenueCat, Inc. (United States) to verify purchases and tell the app which features you own. RevenueCat receives a random, anonymous app user ID created by the app, your purchase history and receipts, and technical details such as your store country, currency, app version and operating system. We use this to unlock what you bought, restore purchases and keep accounting records. See the RevenueCat privacy policy.
The App Store or Google Play may also ask you to rate SoundSense. That prompt and any review you write are handled by Apple or Google.
What we do not do
- The app does not require an account or ask for your name, email address or phone number (the website contact form, below, asks for an email so we can answer).
- We do not record, store or upload audio.
- We do not use GPS or location services.
- We do not use Firebase Analytics or crash reports for advertising, and Firebase Analytics does not use your advertising identifier.
- We do not sell your personal information.
Legal bases (EEA, UK and Switzerland)
- Contract: verifying and restoring your purchases.
- Consent: personalised advertising, Firebase Analytics and, on iPhone, tracking. You can withdraw consent at any time in Privacy choices or the system settings.
- Legitimate interests: showing non-personalised ads to fund the free version, measuring ads, preventing fraud, keeping the app secure and, through Firebase Crashlytics crash reports, finding and fixing crashes.
- Legal obligation: keeping purchase and accounting records.
How long data is kept
Data on your phone stays until you delete it or uninstall the app. RevenueCat keeps purchase records while they are needed to provide what you bought and for the accounting periods required by law. Google keeps advertising data according to its own retention policies. Firebase Crashlytics keeps crash reports for 90 days, and Firebase Analytics keeps usage events for 2 months.
International transfers
Google (including Firebase) and RevenueCat may process data outside the European Economic Area, including in the United States. Where they do, the transfer relies on safeguards recognised under the GDPR, such as the EU-US Data Privacy Framework for certified companies or the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you can ask to access, correct, delete or receive a copy of your personal data, object to or restrict its use, and withdraw consent. Because your measurements never leave your phone, you control them directly in the app. RevenueCat holds records only for purchases. To access or delete them, write to info@just-it.lt with the order number from your purchase receipt (Apple's Order ID, or Google Play's order number starting with "GPA."), which lets us find the record; we cannot identify you otherwise. Firebase crash reports and usage data are tied only to random installation identifiers, not to your name or email, so we cannot find your records from a request; they are deleted automatically after the periods above, and you can stop Analytics in Privacy choices (where it applies) or remove both identifiers by uninstalling the app. If you never bought anything, RevenueCat holds no purchase history for you. Purchase history held by Apple or Google can be managed in your Apple Account or Google Account. For advertising data, use Google's controls described above.
You can also complain to a data protection authority. In Lithuania this is the State Data Protection Inspectorate (Valstybinė duomenų apsaugos inspekcija, vdai.lrv.lt).
Children
SoundSense is a general-audience utility and is not directed at children under 13. Ad requests are limited to content rated for general audiences. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided information through the app, contact us at info@just-it.lt.
This website
soundsense.app sets no cookies and uses no analytics. Our hosting provider, Hostinger, processes standard server logs, including IP addresses, to deliver and protect the site.
If you use the contact form, we receive your email address, your name if you give it, the topic and your message by email, and use them only to answer you (legal basis: legitimate interests, or steps before a contract). The website stores nothing about your message; to stop abuse it keeps only a scrambled (hashed) form of your IP address for rate limiting, deleted within a day. We keep the email as long as needed to deal with your request.
Changes to this policy
If we change how SoundSense handles data, we will update this page and the date above. If a change needs your consent, the app will ask for it before the change applies.
